Medicinal significance and benefits of "Ashwagandha" (Withania somnifera) – A review

Withania somnifera is an important staple plant in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It has been traditionally used in Ayurveda for ages for its rasayana (Rejuvenation) properties. It is frequently mentioned in the religious, social, and medical treatises of India since the time of Vedic civilization. This research attempts to review medicinal value and health benefits according to Ayurvedic and modern pharmacological actions of Ashvagandha. Primary data was gathered from Ayurvedic textbooks and secondary data was collected from previous research articles following the PRISMA model. According to authentic books Ashvagandha, Karma (Therapiutic effects) including Vatakaphahara (balance nerve system and respiratory system) and immunity enhancing action. Studies have revealed Withania somnifera contains active compounds including Withaferin-A, Withanone, Withastramonolide, 27-hydroxywithanone, Physagulin, Withanolide-A and etc. It may help to improve the strength of the body. According to this review Ashwagandha has hepatoprotective activity, cognition enhancing activity, cardioprotective activity, anti-ulcerogenic effect, antimicrobial activity and immunity enhancing action
